‘Opportunity Knocks’ for students at Moray College

08 10 09
The successful ‘Opportunity Knocks’ event at Moray College on 7th October had a structured programme with the intention to emphasise the opportunity for students to gain invaluable experience to compliment their college course(s), whilst also enhancing their employability status and broadening their knowledge of opportunities regarding contribution to citizenship.

The event introduced students to the world of volunteering and business start up initiatives, the activities focused on how students can help others and become involved in their local community.

The organisations featured at the event were ASPIRENorth, Volunteer Centre Moray, Business Gateway, The Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

ASPIRENorth was looking for current students to volunteer to help encourage school pupils to consider college education. Part of the volunteer experience would be to go in to schools and deliver fun and interactive activities.

Volunteer Moray gave advice on how volunteering could provide the students with valuable work experience in a choice of careers, offering them the opportunity to meet different types of people, helping them make a contribution to their community and how all of this can add value to their CV or job applications.

Craig Robertson from Business Gateway gave an informal and interesting presentation on the practical help advice and support for new and growing businesses in Scotland.

The Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust was on hand to offer business advice and information regarding loans, grants and possible funding to support growing businesses.

Karen Forbes from the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, talked to the students about how they could achieve an Award or support the scheme as a volunteer. Either way students could expect to receive a truly memorable and rewarding experience giving them the chance to fulfil their potential.

Brian Currie, Employability Officer at Moray College, said,

“With around 200 students attending, today’s event has been a great success with many students expressing an interest in volunteering. We are keen to get our students to realise the benefits of volunteering and contributing to their community. These organisations will provide follow up sessions in the College to help promote our citizenship agenda.”
