The winners of three different categories of award received recognition for their achievements at a short ceremony which took place in the Beechtree Restaurant at 5pm on Monday 7th June.
1) Moray College UHI Class Representative of the Year Awards
This is the second year that the Class Representative Awards initiative at Moray College UHI has been in operation and once again it has proven to have been very successful. The Class Representatives meet on a monthly basis with the Student Union President, which provides a platform to discuss current issues and put forward ideas from fellow students. The collective action points and matters arising are then reported to the Student Affairs Committee and the College’s Board of Management. The Class Representatives also participate in Course and Directorate committees and are a great support for their class throughout the year.
Will Dale, Student Union President, Moray College said,
“The College felt that it would be appropriate to say thank you to all of the students who participated as Class Representatives and for the extra work they have done on behalf of their fellow students during the year. The specialist Awards, of FE Class Representative of the Year, HE Class Representative of the Year and the Students’ Union President’s Award, were presented to those who were able to show a more in depth commitment to their role.”
The winners for session 2009/10 who were presented with engraved glass trophies were:
Further Education (FE) Class Representative of the Year
Jackie Chesney (Garmouth)
Higher Education (HE) Class Representative of the Year
Vytis Balitrunas (Banff)
Students’ Union President’s Award
Stephen Calcutt (Elgin)
Other Nominees
Holly Cantrill (Elgin)

Claire Laing (Elgin)
Julia Barr (Forres)
Chris Blakesley (Aberlour)
Iona Sutcliffe (Buckie)
The Class Representative of the Year Awards initiative was developed by Heather Henderson, Student Advice Manager at Moray College UHI. Reflecting on the role of the Class Representatives, Heather said,
"We decided to reward the Class Representatives as we realise what an important part they play in helping the college achieve and shape its strategic and operational objectives.
All Class Representatives were given College sweat shirts and USB pens when elected which gave them a real sense of identity. This years participation both in Course Committees, Sparqs training and Student Union meetings with the Student President have been excellent and their input invaluable.”
2) Personal Development Planning (PDP) Awards
Four students received awards for having the best Personal Development Planning (PDP) records for session 2009/10:
Kayleigh Winton (Keith)
Victoria Pearson (Elgin)
Charlotte Watt (Elgin)
Amandine Depentailler - a student from France studying at Moray College UHI
Commenting on the importance of personal development planning as part of the student learning experience whilst at college Assistant Principal Tom McGarry said:
“The personal development of our students is as important an aspect of life at Moray College as their academic achievement. This year we asked our students to highlight where, in both their College studies and personal experiences, they were able to develop not only as learners but as responsible citizens, how they became more confident individuals and how they were able to contribute effectively more widely. The four winners, supported throughout the year by teaching and guidance staff, really engaged in this process and should be congratulated for their excellent Personal Development Plans.”
3) Volunteer Centre Moray Awards
As part of Volunteer Week and in partnership with Moray College UHI, Volunteer Centre Moray wanted to recognise the good work of volunteers within the college.
Accordingly, two awards have been created – Student Volunteer of the Year and Staff Volunteer of the Year.
Following a nominations process, three finalists were chosen for each category from which a winner in each category was ultimately determined. Each winner received a trophy and all the finalists received a framed certificate.
The winner of the Student Volunteer of the Year award was Angus Farr (HND Engineering Systems) from Forres and the other two finalists were Katrina Paton (BA Child & Youth Studies) from Elgin and David John Parker (NQ Business) from Forres.
The winner of the Staff Volunteer of the Year award was Valerie Weston (Support Worker Skills - Skills for Life) from Keith and the other two finalists were Anthea Waite (Hairdressing) from Cawdor and Bruce Young (Support Worker - Skills for Life) from Elgin.
Expressing his delight at the introduction of these new awards for volunteers Brian Currie, Employability Officer at Moray College UHI said:
"This is an excellent opportunity to identify the hard work that staff and students give to the community which often goes unrecognised. Events like this will hopefully encourage others to consider volunteering."
