Aims of the Course To allow students to explore their capacity for imaginative and intellectual engagement with the world. To encourage students to develop their ability to engage in art making through creative thought processes and new applications of a variety of media. To give students the opportunity to showcase their fine art practice in their final year at the annual degree show.
Course Contents The first year of the course allows students to try out a variety of fine art media. Later, the course will allow students to pursue the appropriate skills and understanding required for the development of personal practice.
Level 1 - (Cert HE) Drawing Painting Spatial Studies Mixed Media Drawing Photography Printmaking Contemporary Technology Historical and Critical Studies

Level 2 - (Dip HE) Critical and Contextual Studies Studio Practice Elective Specialist workshops Information Management
Qualification gained at this point: Dip HE Fine Art
Level 3 - (BA) Studio Practice Specialist workshops Research Presentation Professional Practice
Qualification gained at this point: BA Fine Art
Level 4 - (BA Hons) Dissertation Studio Practice Specialist workshops Approaches to Exhibiting
Qualification gained at this point: BA (Hons) Fine Art
Entrance Requirements Three Scottish Highers, one of which is preferably English, and 2 Standard Grade passes (at level 1, 2 or 3);
or the equivalent gained from systems of education outwith Scotland;
or a recognised Access programme.
A portfolio of visual work, which demonstrates the applicants capacity to cope with the demands of the BA (Hons) Fine Art is required.
Admission to the course is considered for mature candidates who do not possess the standard entry criteria but who can present a strong portfolio and evidence of the required understanding and awareness to undertake the course.
Duration of the Course Full time - 4 years. Part time - 8 years minimum.
The following exit qualifications are available on successful completion of each level of study: Level 1: Certificate of Higher Education in Fine Art Level 2: Diploma of Higher Education in Fine Art Level 3: Bachelor of Art in Fine Art
Progression Further study may include Postgraduate study: Masters in Fine Art; Postgraduate Certificate in Education or Diploma in Art Therapy. Employment - some graduates may choose to become practising artists.
Not all graduates will pursue a career in the visual arts and many of the skills developed during the BA (Hons) Fine Art are transferable, hence highly coveted by employers in a variety of fields.
