Aims of the Course
• To enable students to understand the complex interaction of natural and human forces which have shaped the Highlands and Islands. Students will interrelate local and global experiences of managing the environment, discover the historical processes that formed today’s landscapes, and grapple with the concept of ‘heritage’ which is central to our perception of the region.

Year 1 (Cert HE)
• Introduction to the Historical Landscape
• Introduction to Archaeological Theory and Method
• Environment and Heritage Interpretation
• Principles of Ecology
• Introduction to Global Environmental Issues
• Personal Effectiveness and Study Skills
• History of Material Culture
• Interpreting Data

Qualification gained at this point:
Cert HE Environment and Heritage Studies

Year 2 (Dip HE)

• Introduction to GIS
• Nature Conservation
• Environmental Conservation
• Prehistory of the Highlands and Islands
• Permaculture
• Interpreting Risk

Options include:

• Archaeological and Built Heritage Conservation
• Archaeological Reconnaissance and Recording
• Ecological Field Methods

Entrance Requirements
3 Highers or GCSE/As or A level qualifications or an acceptable access programme. For mature students without traditional qualifications the course team look for a portfolio of alternative knowledge of the required skills and experience. Admission to the degree programme is on the understanding that the individual applicant may have a reasonable expectation that they will be able to fulfil the objectives of the programme and achieve the standard required for the award.

Duration of the Course
Full time - 4 years.
Part time study over a longer period is possible.

Individual modules may be taken on a free-standing basis, subject to entry with a reasonable expectation of success.

Progression
• Further study may include related postgraduate education.
• Employment in a related field eg. Scottish Natural Heritage, Historic Scotland, Local Enterprise Companies, Tourist Boards, Local Authorities etc.; to industrial enterprises and country estates which increasingly have to employ, or engage on contract, advisors or consultants in the fields of natural and built heritage; and not least to rural communities who are gaining the confidence, but need the expertise, to take command of their own futures.
