My work began as a response to one of the most common of the age related problems: memory lapses. I have observed that these are totally unpredictable with respect to when they occur and the duration of them. While they are happening the lack of communication is absolute and the person involved seems to focus on a particular time or place and metaphorically disappear there. It is usually somewhere that no one else can follow or share, no matter how close they are. After all, memories can be shared, but they are never identical.

It is this apparent disappearance and the resultant isolation, that this problem produces, which really interests and motivates me. “Grandma has lost her marbles.” does not adequately communicate what is happening, but it is much easier to understand than the medical terminology. To the layman, the use of this unintelligible language, serves to reinforce the isolation and exclusion suffered by those involved, due partly to feelings of embarrassment caused by the reactions of outsiders. The necessary use of a medical dictionary just underlines the confusion already felt.

I am exploring this subject in a visual way, to try to explain/understand it more clearly. The problem raises so many questions in the minds of friends and family members of those afflicted that need to be answered simply and clearly. The immediacy of artwork makes it more accessible and thought provoking, and therefore has a greater capacity for clarification.
