Moray College can provide customised training programmes and a range of short courses to meet the needs of industry, commerce and the public sector. For session 20010/11 our short courses will be promoted to the ‘business’ community by direct mail. We have a database of over 1400 ‘business’ organisations within the college’s catchment area. Skillseekers and Modern Apprenticeships
Also for employers, Moray College is able to offer Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) to employees through the Skillseekers/Modern Apprenticeships initiatives in partnership with Skills Development Scotland.

The Skillseekers initiative offers people the chance to work towards an SVQ at Level 2 whilst in paid employment. Modern Apprenticeships offer the next step, working towards an SVQ at Level 3, which provides the opportunity to train for jobs at advanced craft, technician and supervisory level.

Designed to create a high-calibre workforce, all the Modern Apprenticeship frameworks are developed by the industry or sector in which they will be implemented.

Who is eligible?
All 16 and 17 year old school leavers are eligible, as are 18 year olds leaving full time education to enter the job market for the first time.

Helping to Meet the Needs of the Unemployed
Moray College has a significant involvement in helping unemployed people to return to the world of work through a number of different initiatives including ‘Training for Work’, ‘HeadStart’ and ‘Work Preparation Courses’.

Training for Work
Training for Work is a programme funded by Skills Development Scotland which is designed to assist unemployed adults of all ages by providing training and work experience, which will improve their chances of securing work, change career direction and/or advance their career objectives.

Who is Eligible?
Eligibility checks are carried out by Jobcentre Plus staff but many people can access Training for Work provision including:

• People with disabilities
• Lone parents
• Returners to the labour market
• Job seekers aged 50 and over
• Others unemployed for at least 6 months (and their partners)

Benefits to Employers from Participation in Training for Work
• Mature, experienced and committed staff
• Recently trained staff
• Individuals with up-to-date skills
• Additional training may be accessed to meet your organisation’s needs
• The opportunity to assess suitability before employment

Headstart
HeadStart is a programme delivered by Moray College working in partnership with Shaw Trust and is part of the Government’s New Deal for Disabled People (NDDP) provision. It is designed to help people who are claiming a disability or health related benefit to return to the world of work. For those who meet the eligibility criteria for HeadStart Moray College can:

• provide support and advice to access training
• help customers with confidence building to help them achieve their goals
• support customers to access benefit protection
• arrange work experience to help customers find their preferred type of work
• help customers to check their eligibility to receive top up
  money when they start work, including tax credits
• pay customers a £250 Job Start Grant when they start work
• provide customers with support even after they have started work

Work Preparation Courses
In partnership with local organisations and employers Moray College provides short work-focused training to help prepare individuals to work within specific sectors which are having difficulty recruiting the right staff.

These individuals are usually recruited through Jobcentre Plus and can be from a variety of disadvantaged groups, eg. lone parents, people on incapacity benefit, young people who need more choices and chances.

Partner organisations include Skills Development Scotland, the Highland Employer Coalition, the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations and Jobcentre Plus.
All of these courses include skills required when seeking employment such as:

Assertiveness/confidence building

Analysis of existing skills and experience

Preparing a Curriculum Vitae

Completing job application forms and letter writing

How to succeed at interviews

Working as part of a team

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and improving fitness

In addition, industry specific training is included which has been developed in consultation with local employers including:-

• Prepare 2 Care
  to address skills shortages in the Care sector.
  This course is normally delivered over six weeks on the basis of 4 days x 3 hours per day.

• Get Ready 4 Retail
  to address skill shortages in the Retail sector.
  This course is normally delivered over six weeks on the basis of 4 days x 3 hours per day.

• Helping Hands 4 Hospitality
  to upskill individuals looking to work in the Hospitality sector.
  This course is normally delivered over six weeks on the basis of 5 days x 3 hours per day.

• Call Centre Cadets
  to upskill individuals looking to work in Call Centres.
  This course is normally delivered over four weeks on the basis of 4 days x 3 hours per day.

• Expanding Horizons
  a non-sector specific employability course.
  This course is normally delivered over five weeks on the basis of 5 days x 3 hours per day.

• Lone Parent WOW (World of Work) course
  a confidence building course for lone parents.
  This is a one week course delivered on the basis of 5 days x 4 hours per day.

Oil and Gas Assessment Centres
At its Technology Centre at Linkwood, New Elgin, Moray College has specialist assessment centres for gas and oil to meet the needs of plumbing and heating engineers who are obliged to renew their qualifications to install and commission gas and oil appliances every five years.
